Fred Bear Stories

Who was Fred Bear?

You could describe Fred Bear with two words: inspiration and innovation.

Inspiration

Fred was himself a bow hunter, inspired as a young man by seeing Art Young hunt with bow and arrow in the film "Alaskan Adventures."

Fred, too, would inspire millions through his books, articles, ABC films, and even guest appearances on television shows. He had hunted with astronauts and well-known entertainers, yet he was never too busy to shake a stranger's hand, sign autographs or hug a child.

It was this down-to-earth nature that touched so many, young and old, leaving friends to gratefully acknowledge that he was "just Fred."

Innovation

Fred was an innovator. He made over 100 contributions to the design of the bow and arrow. Without question, his innovations changed archery forever.

It was his love of the sport that spurred on his noted developments, and often he took little or no money for these advancements. His satisfaction was in the sharing of his gifts and the knowledge that what he offered to the sport would be repaid doubly by greatly increasing the number of people around the world who would take up archery.

A storyteller

Fred loved telling hunting stories. You can hear Fred tell stories to a group of Canadian guides on our CD. They are sitting around the campfire one afternoon during a bear hunt in Saskatchewan.
